  1. The formal teaching of religion in schools.

  11. parents to withdraw their children from RE on
  12. conscientious grounds. In the USA, religious
  13. education within the doctrines of a
  14. particular church is prohibited in public
  15. (state-maintained) schools because of the
  16. separation of church and state guaranteed
  17. under the first amendment to the
  18. constitution; however, the study of
  19. comparative religion is permitted. In the
